Finns are mad for ice hockey

The Ice Hockey World Championships are in progress again and Finland’s been doing quite well so far. They’re undefeated.

A New York Times blog about ice hockey featured the personification of Finnish ice hockey madness, TV sports commentator Antero Mertaranta. He may be mad, but he’s mad in exactly the right sort of way to be the perfect ice hockey commentator.

Se on siinä!

Russian opposition leaders to be arrested

The Other Russia opposition leaders, Garry Kasparov and Eduard Limonov, have found out the Russian authorities are planning on arresting them to prevent them from attending the Other Russia coalition’s National Assembly in two weeks.

These “tactical” arrests are nothing new in the neo-Soviet Russia, of course, but what’s new is going after these high profile leaders in such a manner. Garry Kasparov, of course, is well known around the world for being the grand master chess player.

New York City air quality is horrible

The American Lung Association released their State of the Air 2008 report this week.

New York City receives a failing grade for particle pollution and rises to 8th place in the list of cities most polluted by ozone. Furthermore respiratory diseases are on the rise in the city.

Louise Vetter, president and ceo of American Lung Association of New York City, says New York City’s air problems are the result of high traffic and the density of traffic.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the wisdom of our State legislators in Albany. They recently decided to floor New York City Mayor Bloomberg’s proposal for congestion traffic pricing in New York City. I thank them for their contribution in increasing pediatric asthma cases in New York City. I hope your children living in upstate New York continue to enjoy fresh air. Just be careful when coming over to visit us city folks here in New York City. As you may know the air quality here will just keep worsening. Thanks to you.

MUD creator Richard Bartle rips on video game critics

Famed MUD creator Richard Bartle has written an op ed article in The Guardian.

I’m talking to you, you self-righteous politicians and newspaper columnists, you relics who beat on computer games: you’ve already lost. Enjoy your carping while you can, because tomorrow you’re gone.

He’s saying the generational gap is closing in on the “old-timers” and they better adapt or see themselves increasingly irrelevant as time goes by and the younger generations are more and more familiar with video games.

Human rights activists continue to get persecuted in Russia

In yet another small Russian province human rights activists are getting persecuted by the local gestapo.

In Nizhny Novgorod, located in central Russia, the local police force raided the offices of a human rights activist group and homes of several opposition leaders. All computers of the Foundation to Promote Tolerance were confiscated and the office was sealed.

Some of the people raided got their passports confiscated. Maxim Baganov got slapped with a charge for Extremism. Basically the authorities are charging him for being a terrorist, more or less. All the people involved have been under 24/7 surveillance for some time before the raids.

The people getting persecuted in this manner are speculating that show trials are the next step in the process. They are saying the authorities will fabricate extremist material in their name and recall “victims” of extremist actions conducted by the opposition leaders. Goebbels would be proud of these New Communists.

Jack Thompson aka Massacre Chaser sanctioned by the Florida Supreme Court

Jack Thompson, the Massacre Chaser extraordinaire, moronic vigilante of morality and a delusional narcissistic egomaniac has been sanctioned by the Florida Supreme Court. FINALLY!

The Florida Bar Association has been on his case for quite some time already having forced him to go through a psychological evaluation twice in the past. The Florida Bar Association is also currently in disciplinary proceedings against Jack Thompson. Jack Thompson is facing disbarment should the Florida Bar Association find that his actions in recent years has broken the rules of the Florida Bar Association.

Today, however, another matter was decided on. Jack Thompson thought it would be a great idea to send legal picture books disguised as legal filings to the Florida Supreme Court. He was warned that if he continues doing that, he will face sanctions. Today the hammer struck down.

The Florida Supreme Court has issued an order instructing the court clerks to reject any filings by Jack Thompson that are not co-signed by another attorney in good standing with the Florida Bar Association. It was also ordered if Jack Thompson violates the court order he will face further sanctions.

As Jack Thompson is one regular Xerox machine sometimes filing several filings a day, this is going to seriously limit his ability to fight windmills down there in Miami. Since he’s essentially only working for himself, the only real costs to him with his frequent and abusive filings has been time. This time, however, he has to pay some other lawyer to read and sign his filings before he can file them with the Florida Supreme Court.

Score one for the establishment! Let’s get this idiot disbarred!

Spammah in da slammah

Two spammers got their sorry asses in the news in the past few days.

The first one is career spamming slime that goes by the name of Robert Soloway. He got caught by the man some time ago and on Friday 3/14 finally made a plea deal with the prosecutor. He is pleading guilty to felony mail fraud, fraud in connection with electronic mail and failing to file a tax return. Most other charges were dropped in exchange for his guilty plea. He still faces up to 20 years in prison for the fraud charge.

It’s wonderful to see scum of the earth like dear Robert in such a big mess.

And today FTC announced it’s going to fine Valueclick and its subsidiary Hi-Speed Media $2.9M for spamming and defrauding US consumers with fake free product spam ads. Go you, FTC!
